Basic Quinoa

www.wholefoodies.org - Bring 1 part water (1 cup) to a boil. Add 1 part quinoa (1 cup) to the water along with some sea salt or seaweed. Seaweed is preferable due to its easily assimilated organic salts that they contain. Once the quinoa and water are at a boil, put a lid on it and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. Dress it up afterwards with spices, nuts, seeds, seasonings, fresh vegetables, herbs or a sauce.

RAW CRACKER-BREAD fabricated with vegetable abstract pulp

This was my second experiment with making a raw, dehydrator cracker-bread using the vegetable pulp left over from juicing. Wow, you end up with SO much veg pulp after juicing and it feels like such a waste to just throw it out. I did not follow a recipe, I just made it up. It took about 12 hours of dehydrating to get a mostly crunchy cracker like texture. I ended up preferring the thicker bread-like rounds as opposed to the thinner cracker sheets. Also, I think adding A LOT more spice would really inspire me to choose these over conventional breads or toast. I think that its all about experimentation based on the type of veg pulp you have on hand. Oooo, I can even imagine something with a hint of fruity sweetness and curry spice... hmmm... Here is a list of what ingredients I used this time around: 1). veg pulp left over from juicing about a 1.5 quarts of juice (carrots, cilantro, parsley, cucumber, celery and a tiny piece of ginger) 2) As a binder: soaked chia seeds (1/4 cup seeds to 2.5 cups water) and soaked whole flax seeds (1/4 cup seeds to 1.5 cups water) - each were soaked for a few hours 3) Seasoned to taste with: fresh jalapeno, shallot, garlic, sea salt, pepper, cider vinegar, lemon juice, tamari soy sauce, cayenne powder, dried chili flakes, and misc fresh garden herbs 4) about 1.5 cups mixed soaked and sprouted nuts: pumpkin, sunflower and almonds I blended it all up in a food processor, glopped it onto dehydrator sheets with parchment paper and tested for ...

How to Select a Nutritional Healthy Diet For Your Parrots

!±8± How to Select a Nutritional Healthy Diet For Your Parrots

Parrots require a healthy diet that comprises a wide range of different types of food. It is important to understand what are the various nutritional values of food you should select for your parrots so as to reduce or prevent complicated medical problems in pet parrots.

One of the questions often asked, "Can I just feed my parrot on seeds alone?"

Sunflower seed is totally unsuitable as the main constituent of a parrot's diet, as these are far too high in fat and lacking in important vitamins and minerals.

Parrots in the wild prefer to eat foods that are high in either fats or sugars which contain more calories to provide them the high-energy, high-fat food as fuel for long distance flying. However, in captivity parrots do not need such a high intake of rich food since they only fly short distances in their cages and cannot burn off the excess calories.

So, the best healthy diet should be mainly carbohydrates (about 70-80%) with around 15% vegetable protein and only 5-8% fat. Cereal grains such as wheat, oats, millet, rice and maize are low in fats but high in carbohydrates and protein.

Typical fat content are contained in these food and should be fed sparingly:

    o Sunflower seeds: 48%
    o Pine nuts: 68%
    o Peanuts 50%

Conversely, legumes such as peas and beans contain very little or no fat, with around 80% carbohydrates and 10-20% protein. Vegetables and fresh fruits such as bananas, pomegranates, celery, carrots and broccoli should also be fed to be part of a balanced and healthy diet.

Legumes cannot be eaten as a dry food and have to be soaked in warm water (about 12 hours) before given to your bird. On soaking, this amount will increase in weight as the seed absorbs water.

On the other hand, you could also allow the mixture to sprout and germinate for another 12 hours which has better benefits. Make sure you keep the food moist at room temperature (not soaking in water) and rinse it thoroughly several times in cold water to prevent any bacterial contamination of the food. In this way, their vitamin content is further increased.

Offer your parrot a mixture of different legumes such as chickpeas, mung beans, black-eyed peas, aduki beans and pinto beans and observe which of these your parrot likes best.

A balance healthy diet is recommended for most parrots would be about

o 35% soaked/sprouted beans or mixed beans (chickpeas, black-eyed peas, aduki beans and pinto beans, etc.)
o 25% soaked/sprouted seeds and cereal grains (sunflower, safflower, wheat, oats, rice, hemp, millet, maize, etc.)
o 40% fresh fruit and vegetables such as apples, grapes, pomegranates, bananas, sprouts, broccoli, green beans, peas in the pod, corn on the cob, sweet potato, etc.

The following foods are toxic and dangerous to birds and must be avoided: avocado (dangerous), alcohol, chocolate, coffee and tea. Avoid salty food such as chips and fatty food such as cookies, cheese and even meat which can cause a bird to be chronically sick with liver and kidney problems.

Birds cannot digest milk with high lactose (fat) and so many dairy products are inaccessible to birds. Instead, feed them with fermented dairy products in small quantities, such as yogurt and cheese, where the lactose has been broken down so as not minimize the salt intake as part of the healthy diet.

I hope you find these simple tips on nutritional and healthy diet for your parrots useful.

    The Best Cleansing Foods

    !±8± The Best Cleansing Foods

Your colon cleanse will be enhanced by eating foods that will "move through" (so to speak) quickly, without too much effort. They will be easy to digest, and may even contain some fiber. The best cleansing foods will help the body get rid of old build-up. For those who've been researching this, I'm sure you've heard the term "tar" or "mucoid plaque."

"Mucoid" means "of mucus" and "plaque" means "plastic." You know how people have heart attacks because of arterial plaque? Even though blood flows constantly, sticky platelets get left along the sides and build up to eventually clog. Same thing happens in your digestive tract - but it's a different kind of plaque. Your arteries may build up calcium plaque while the bowels may build up mucosal plaque. So eating foods that cleanse your body instead of foods that leave behind build-up will make your efforts more worthwhile.

Many believe the body can eliminate this buildup on its own. However, think of digestion and cleansing this way. If you fall in the mud, you can get up and wash the mud off. But if you fall down in the mud, and a truck comes along and dumps another 50 pounds of mud on you, it's not so easy to get up - it's harder work. There's nothing wrong with your body, but it is over-burdened and now may need help. Cleansing is our way to help our internal organs eliminate the excess buildup.

The best cleansing foods to choose are; fresh raw fruits and vegetables, some lightly steamed veggies, nuts and seeds and whole grains only.

Lots of; herbal teas, water, lemon water and diluted fruit juice

Noooooo dairy, alcohol or processed sugar. If you eat meat, make sure it's in small (size of your palm), lean portions.

If you eat grains, use only whole grains such as quinoa, amaranth, wild or basmati rice, and some whole grain sprouted breads and no pasta. Keep in mind that even though they contain some fiber, all grains will slow your cleansing process, so the more you eat, the slower you'll cleanse. This is because they don't have the enzymes of the raw fruits and veggies and they take longer for you body to digest. This isn't so bad if you want to limit cleansing side effects.

These are general guidelines. Follow these simple rules and remember to eat no or extremely small amounts of processed food to make your cleanse.

Remember no matter how good your colon cleanse supplements are, you must choose the best cleansing foods because loading up on goodies will sabotage any efforts. Unfortunately, over eating causes your body to become too busy digesting and eliminating this excess. There is no energy or strength left to cleanse excess buildup and old waste. Junk food and/or too much food doesn't make more energy, it will burden and deplete your body.

The bottom line is, there are certain foods can make or break your colon cleanse. The best cleansing foods enhance digestion to help your body cleanse. Poor choices will burden your colon and your whole system. Using the list above will help you decide what diet is best for your colon cleanse.

The Benefits of Eating Raw Nuts

!±8± The Benefits of Eating Raw Nuts

Nuts are an amazing food. Nuts are very beneficial for your health and they taste great too! Nuts are high in calories but they are still very beneficial to your body because they are loaded with mono saturated fats, which help to lower heart disease. Many nuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are good for your heart and for your arteries. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are helpful for making your heart rhymes more stable so you can try to avoid a heart attack. Nuts also have L-arginine which is helpful to your heart and arteries because it makes your arteries more flexible and leads to less blood clots. Nuts also have been known to have plant sterols in them which helps lower cholesterol.

It is best to eat nuts raw, soaked, or sprouted because they are considered to be live foods. Live foods are foods that have not been heated at high temperatures or cooked. Heating nuts to above 118 degrees starts to destroy beneficial enzymes. When these enzymes are destroyed the nuts are unable to sprout so they would be considered not live. Most vegans and raw foodists use raw nuts to make nut milks and they use the nut milk as they would regular milk in recipes, on cereal, or to drink.

Some of the best raw nuts are walnuts, cashews, brazil, macadamia, almonds, pecans, and filberts. They also make great milks when processed correctly. Almonds are one of my favorite nuts they are high in protein, vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and iron. Almonds also have the highest amount of calcium of any other nut so they make a great substitute for dairy products for raw foodist and vegans. Almonds also have some of the highest fiber content of any other nut. Cashews are another good nut but should be refrigerated once the package is opened because the spoil easily. Cashews are high in copper and magnesium. Cashews also have one of the lowest fat content of any other nut. Macadamia nuts are also one of my favorites. Macadamia nuts are a high energy food and contain no cholesterol. The natural oils in macadamias contain 78% monounsaturated fats, the highest of any oil including olive oil.Macadamias contain tocopherols and tocotrienols, which are derivatives of Vitamin E, phytosterols such as sitosterol and also selenium. One of the best nuts for you are walnuts. Walnuts are one of the best sources of omega 3 essential fatty acids and they have more antioxidants than most other nuts. Brazil nuts are extremely nutrient rich and high in antioxidants like selenium which helps to neutralize free radicals. Filberts are also very beneficial. If you add filberts to your salads or smoothies then they help you to absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Filberts are also great for anti aging properties such as Alzheimer's, stroke, arthritis, wrinkles, and heart disease.

Almost all nuts have photo nutrients which are biologically active components that protect our bodies systems. Many nuts act as antioxidants, which scavenge the free radicals that oxidize blood fats. Photo nutrients operate as part of complex systems that are only partly understood.

Nuts are an amazing food! They are so good for you and they taste great and can be used in so many raw and vegan recipes but just be careful to not over eat them because they are high in calories.
